It is no wonder community organizing is popular among religious communities. As I consider my experience in COR and in pastoral leadership in a Lutheran church, I am struck by the intersection between community organizing and congregational development. Community organizing is a proven model for addressing injustice and promoting a vibrant public life, but it is also simply good ministry. The work of developing meaningful relationships within a community and identifying talented and committed leaders to address issues of concern is as central to a healthy congregation as it is to a healthy society.
